- About the work
Léger builds his painting with lines, large fields of colour - and a man in hardhat. In his works, machines are just as important, and just as beautiful, as humans. Contrasts of colour and form, with curves and cylinders, rhythmicise the surfaces in a joyful and luminous cubism. This style prevails throughout his oeuvre. In 1924, he founded Académie Moderne in Paris, together with his colleague Amédée Ozenfant, and Léger worked there as a teacher. This school had a strong impact on Nordic students, many of whom adopted the style of synthetic cubism, characterised by solid shapes and fields.
