About the artworkAlfred Flechtheim came to Paris in about 1906. He was so fascinated by the new French modern painting he found there that he changed the direction of his own life. Instead of taking over his father’s company, he became one of the era’s most forward-looking art dealers, a great promoter and supporter of modern art. He became an important friend to Nils Dardel, and when Flechtheim opened a gallery in his hometown of Düsseldorf just before the start of World War I, Dardel was the only Swedish artist represented in gallery’s first show. In return, Dardel gave the art dealer his support in procuring art, including serving as agent for his friend the collector Rolf de Maré. With Dardel’s guidance, de Maré built a unique collection of modern art.
