About the artworkA generator sends an electric current through two parallel metal wires in a glass tube. A short-circuit takes place and a flame flares up. A fan makes the flame move. And the pattern repeats itself constantly.Hans Haacke is interested in systems, both in physics and in social and political contexts. A work by Haacke can be a technically complex sculpture, or an examination of society. Using photographs and facts A Real-Time Social System exposed the landlords of New York slums. The work was supposed to be shown at the Guggenheim Museum in 1971, but due to its controversial nature the exhibition was cancelled.
