- About the work

Moderna Museet’s collection contains paintings, sculpture and installations by the Argentine-born Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija. This work is a rudimentary house designed by the artist and built in Stockholm. After being exhibited here, the house was then reconstructed in Northern Thailand where Tiravanija owns some land and a rice paddy, a site designed like a stage set for a social environment where friends and colleagues can spend time. Since the early 1990s Rirkrit Tiravanija has been celebrated for preparing food as part of an art show and eating it with visitors. These works, which are to some extent about breaking down a barrier between life and art, also involve a discussion about the Western separation of subject and object; a dichotomy that is by no means self-evident from a Thai point of view.
