TRISHA DONNELLY, UNTITLED

The pictorial surface is dominated by a classical sculpture of an androgynous David with one foot triumphantly placed on the head of Goliath. An iconic work by the Italian renaissance sculptor Donatello (1386–1466). The only movement is the cloudlike formations in the background, constantly, silently changing. The innate characteristic of film as moving image seems suspended, in a work that suggests the unstoppable flow of time, or the timelessness of art. Trisha Donnelly creates videos, sound, photographs, drawings and performances. Her subdued, terse works often seem enigmatic and hard to decode. Donnelly herself is wary of descriptive texts or interpretations. She stresses the inadequacy of language to express thoughts and ideas. The work is there to be experienced or not, in the encounter with the viewer’s own references.
