About the artworkThis sculpture of gigantic mushrooms was made by Carsten Höller, born in Belgium and now living and working in Sweden. The artist has a PhD in biology and wrote his theses on the interaction of insects via their sense of smell. Parts of these mushrooms are bright red and draw our attention, like the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) in the forest. Other parts of the objects resemble a delicious edible cep mushroom, adding an alternative interpretation to the work. The poison of the fly agaric affects the brain, and Carsten Höller is fascinated by art from a similar perspective: art as a mind-altering substance.
