About the artworkOne of the paintings crowded onto the wall in Otto G. Carlsund’s presentation of post-cubist painting at the Stockholm Exhibition was a still life by Amédée Ozenfant. During the 1920s, the artist taught at the Académie Moderne in Paris where Carlsund was a student. Ozenfant was a typical modernist in his restless search for new non-traditional forms, in an artistic setting where new “isms” constantly appeared − often formulated in manifestos and other texts. One of these isms was Purism and its doctrines were published in Après le Cubisme (After Cubism) in 1918 by Ozenfant and the architect Le Corbusier. Purism wanted to make Cubism “cleaner” and less fragmented. The Stockholm Exhibition’s still life shows familiar shapes of musical instruments and a decanter in layered figure planes. Distinctly modern, but the grooves on the decanter show the artist’s fondness for classicism.
