About the artworkShoes behind yellow membranes, resembling old group photos where people from the distant past appear like ghosts. Seductively appealing on the surface, but underneath it is full of pain. The starting point for Salcedo's works is often her homeland, Colombia, a nation racked with violent conflicts.
The title Atrabiliarios is Spanish and comes from the Latin word for black bile, traditionally associated with bitter anger. The dark threads allude to stitches in a lacerated body. The empty shoes suggest their missing owners. Through the haze we discern a history of imprisonment, violence and longing.
