About the artworkKah Bee Chow’s multifaceted output encapsulates both social criticism, personal references and a pinch of humour. The installation Shield Formation #3 from 海⻱ consists of several components which together guide the viewer’s gaze and physical movement in the room. The objects suggest limitation, shielding and controlled surveillance. But maybe also a sense of being protected. The two Chinese signs in the title translate as “sea turtle” – a recurring symbol in Kah Bee Chow’s oeuvre, which also in shape resembles the Malaysian island of Penang where she grew up. The sea turtle shells are becoming more porous, however, due to human influence, and some, including experts on feng shui, believe this will harm the wellbeing of the island.
