About the artworkA graduate from the Valand Academy, Jörgen Svensson also has a BA in sociology. His interest in behavioural science is obvious in the extensive projects he pursued over many years – staged scenes that sparked series of events where people interacted, which penetrated the social fabric. The social element was something Svensson brought with him in 2008 when he grew tired of these massive projects and began increasingly to work on images, alone in his studio. His paintings are strongly impacted by Svensson’s background in an industrial town in Värmland, where textiles and crafts were important means of expression. In this picture, we see the pillars of society, representations of municipality, region, church and state. The method used is unique. Svensson has laboriously applied paint to cotton fabric using an injection needle. The procedure alludes to memories of some of his childhood friends in Värmland, who died from substance abuse.
