About the artworkAcross surfaces resembling enormous mobile screens, a drama in three acts is shown. Text appears on the screens like messages in a dating app. Kalle Brolin sets this associative story in the coal mines of Scania in the 19th century, where orphans were brutally exploited as labour.  Now, discussions are underway to mine for vanadium in the same area, a metal that can be used in batteries for mobile phones, a natural part of life for young people today. Vanadium is named after the Norse goddess of fruitfulness and sexuality, Vanadis (also called Freya). I am Spirited Away uses documentary photos, myths and local lore to explore various layers of exploitation and love.
