- About the work
Walker Evans photographed New York street life and architecture in the 1920s, in a series of boldly-composed pictures. The vertiginous angles and abstract forms in these early photographs by Evans were strongly influenced by European modernism. Evans reacted against the more romantic, so-called pictorialist tradition in photography. His European predecessor Eugène Atget’s street pictures from Paris prompted Evans to focus on what was special about New York. Atget’s pictures of Paris as it went through rapid change around 1900 also inspired European avant-garde visual artists. Walker Evans is famous for his documentary photography from the American Depress
