- About the work

Atsuko Tanaka, one of Japan’s most idiosyncratic and experimental modern artists, joined Gutai, the Osaka-based radical group, in 1955. She had already created some significant work by that point. The Gutai group combined performance, painting and an interest in chance, time and space. The installation piece in the collection of Moderna Museet is made of rayon in a lurid shade of cerise; the cloth is kept continually moving by an electric table fan placed on the floor. The artist has said of this material: “I wanted to use the most distasteful colour imaginable. (...) I wanted to destroy the superficiality of the conventional artistic look.”
