- About the work
The desert, the ocean and the sky are motifs that Vija Celmins has been working with since the 1970s. Vast natural expanses without any human presence – something both liberating and overwhelming. The images that may depict night skies have their origins in astronomy and space research. If the series reproduces anything it would be a photograph from a volume on astronomy. Currently Celmins is reproducing her earlier works, each one takes on a tone of its own with a different content. Viewers tend to project their own romantic notions onto the images, as the artist puts it. She studied in Los Angeles and lived on the West Coast of the USA in the 1970s, a period when many artists were consumed by the photographic technologies of the Space Age, particularly those close to NASA’s laboratory in southern California.
