About the artworkUkranian-born Maya Deren is regarded as one of the key figures of avant-garde American film. Meshes of the Afternoon is an intense and enigmatic story, where the artist explores several cinematic techniques, including slow motion and sharp camera angles. The narrative appears to move in circles, where Deren in the lead role is perceived alternately as victim, witness and murderer. The symbolically-laden imagery, where keys, knives or shards of mirrors are charged with meaning, is typical of the surrealist circles she operated in. Maya Deren worked closely with Man Ray and Luis Buñuel and she continues to be a great influence.
