About the artworkBarbara Kruger started off as a graphic designer for lifestyle and fashion magazines, but moved on to visual arts in the early 1980s. She created collages by placing lines of text on photographs from mass media. In art, she saw a means of drawing attention to feminist issues and highlighting cultural constructs of power, identity and sexuality. Her works appeal directly to the viewer, prompting us to reflect critically on how mass media messages affect how we see ourselves and the world. Untitled (I am your immaculate conception) can be regarded as a direct response to the American debate on abortion law. The text alludes to the Christian concept of the immaculate conception, and the work is a sharp comment on the hypocritical demands on women.
