About the artworkAndrea Zittel originally created a version of A-Z Mobile Compartment Units in the spring of 2003 for the project Moderna Museet c/o Swedish Travelling Exhibitions, which took the form of an exhibition-bus on tour to 13 places in Sweden.
Within the framework of her company A-Z Institute of Investigative Living, she examines the factors that make up our lives. She creates systems of small movable units, extremely compact "dwellings" of almost Spartan simplicity, in the borderland between art, design, domestic objects and architecture.
Her sculpture has now been produced in durable materials and has even been tested for living in. There is an air of functionalism about the work: a specific spatial unit for practically every human need.
