About the artworkMonica Sjöö moved to Bristol, UK, in her twenties and formed a group there to stop the exploitation of nature and promote women’s art and rights. She narrowly escaped being prosecuted for her painting "God Giving Birth" (1968) when it was exhibited in England. Not only were her works political – they were also considered to be obscene. Today, however, they are regarded as feminist icons. Sjöö was an intellectual theorist, researching archaeology and religion, albeit with a very personal belief in a goddess. "The Cosmos in her Womb" was inspired by a Neolithic grave with a child buried under a boulder. The muted colours form a cosmos, as a link to the origin of everything, and as an opposite to the universal chaos.
