About the artworkRosemarie Trockel is famous for her subtle social criticism and subversive artistic strategies. Turning cultural codes on their head, she reinterprets traditional femininity – such as the craft of knitting or the kitchen domain. Trockel’s work is often full of art historical references, including pop, minimalism, op art and modernist abstraction. Her breakthrough came in the 1980s, with her machine-knitted works
in wool, resembling abstract paintings. With her hob paintings, she confronts the patriarchal dominance of the art world, by elevating an object normally associated with household chores into art. As in this work, Trockel’s hobs can be presented as wall reliefs, but they can also be used in sculptures resembling loudspeakers or turntables.
