About the artwork

Nina Kogan can be identified in the history of the Russian avant-garde as the initiator of the first Suprematist ballet in 1920 and as an active member of UNOVIS, a collective founded in the same year by professors and students from the People’s Art School in Vitebsk. Kogan was simultaneously a teacher at the school and Malevich’s student, thus combining his teaching method with her own improvisational one. During the Second World War and after Kogan’s death in 1942, almost all of her artistic production silently disappeared, until the 1970s, when a large number of her works came to light. Her legacy consists of Suprematist compositions of geometric forms, like this work in the collection.
