About the artworkThe sculpture CRUTCHER confronts us in the room. In its monumentality and hard, industrial materials, it can come across as mighty and threatening, but its construction also makes it fragile and vulnerable. Hanni Kamaly’s skeletal sculptures are somewhere between human and inhuman. They ask us how we see life and how we relate to the lives of others alternately as subjects and objects according to our own motives. Her sculptures are often named after people who are the victims of colonial or state violence. Terence Crutcher was an African-American who was shot to death unarmed next to his car in the street during a police intervention in Tulsa in 2016. How should he be commemorated?
